What is the history of Sandy Hill?
Sandy Hill began as the estate of Louis-Théodore Besserer, who donated part of the land to the University of Ottawa. It was subdivided and became home to most of Ottawa's lumber barons, and during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries it was the city's wealthiest neighbourhood.

After Ottawa became the capital, the area housed senior public servants and a Prime Minister, who lived at Stadacona Hall and later at what is now Laurier House. Streetcars, bridges and automobiles made it more accessible, and the very wealthy moved to Rockcliffe Park.
After the Second World War many mansions became embassies. Wikipedia reports a 30% population drop in the 1960s and 1970s, and a redevelopment of Strathcona Heights in the early 1990s.
